Hypothetical Learning Trajectory (HLT) Design on the History 0f Al-Khawarizmi to Develop Student’s Mathematical Communication in Algebra Course

Abstract


Objective of this research was to develop students’ mathematical communication ability in Algebra course by using the HLT, designed through the history of Al-Khawarizmi. The study was carried out at the Department of Mathematics Education of the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Uninus, Indonesia. The study used design research consisted of three stages: preliminary study, classroom experiment and retrospective analysis. The research had just completed the preliminary stage and it was currently beginning classroom experiment stage. HLT which have been generated involves: The history of Al-Khawarizmi; quadratic equation; Al-Khawarizmi’s completing the squaqre method; solving the quadratic equation with coefficient of x2 = 1, and solving the quadratic equation with coefficient of x2 ≠ 1. Based on observations during classroom experiments, it should be assumed that the students’ ability on mathematical communication in Algebra can be developed by using the history of muslim mathematicians as the context of learning.
